The 1854-S is numismatically significant as the very first gold dollar struck at the San Francisco mint. It is a one-year type as well as it is the only coin from this facility which uses the Type One design.t is scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades and it becomes rare in MS63 and above.

This example has an unusual appearance for the issue with some mint-made porosity on the obverse but a very choice and frosty reverse. Both sides show light yellow-gold color and are well defined.

Only three PCGS MS62 examples have sold at auction since 2009. The last of these was ex Heritage 10/12: 5481 which realized $3,525.

There are certainly rarer gold dollars from this mint but none have the historic and numismatic significance of the 1854-S.
