The 1852-C is one of the two most common gold dollars from this mint but it is many times harder to locate than its counterpart the 1851-C. Most 1852-C dollars are seen in EF45-AU53 grades and nice high end AU’s with natural color and surfaces are not easy to locate.

This very pleasing “slider” example shows deep, natural green-gold toning on the obverse and reverse. There doesn’t appear to be any wear but the combination of some flatness of strike and cabinet friction on the high spots has compelled PCGS to grade it conservatively.  On the reverse, there is a mint-made planchet depression through LA in DOLLAR; this is seen on many examples of this date.

The last PCGS AU58 1852-C dollar to sell at auction was all the way back in the 2005 FUN sale when Heritage 1/05: 8435 realized $3,450. There are no records for an AU58 with CAC approval from either service.

An extremely attractive, fresh coin with the eye appeal of a full Mint State piece.

CAC has approved three in this grade with five finer.
