The 1850-C is the rarest collectable Type One gold dollar from the Charlotte mint. It is usually seen in lower grades and properly graded AU55 examples are scarce; especially with natural color and choice surfaces.

This fresh-to-the-market example is highlighted by considerable amounts of semi-prooflike luster and very pleasing orange-russet color which shades to red at the obverse border. The strike is better than usual for the issue and the surfaces are choice with no detracting marks. The overall eye appeal is well above average for the issue.

Only two PCGS AU55 1850-C gold dollars have sold at auction since 2007. An example with CAC approval brought $4,370 as Stacks Bowers 8/111: 9127 while another, in an old green label holder, realized $4,888 as Heritage 8/11: 5307.

This is an expensive and infrequently seen issue in Uncirculated, so this attractive PCGS 55 is about the nice available quality.

CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
