RARE AND VERY UNDERVALUED 1856 LARGE DATE DIME: PCGS/CAC MS64
FS-102, Large Date variety.
The 1856 Dime is known with a Small date and Large date variety. The latter is many times more scarce and it is very rare in properly graded MS64 and above.
This fresh-to-the-market example is well within the Condition Census for the issue. Both sides show attractive natural dappled apple green and cinnamon toning with the reverse more reddish in hue than the obverse. The underlying surfaces are clean and frosty and just a few small marks can be seen with 5x magnification.
The Gardner IV: 98251 coin realized $6,463 and it was not CAC approved. At the Heritage 2013 ANA sale, an NGC MS65 sold for $16,450 as Lot 3502.
This is the nicest 1856 Large Date dime which I have personally handled and it would fit well into a world-class set of Liberty Seated Dimes.
CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
