Only 4,078 1852-D quarter eagles were made and this is sixth rarest Dahlonega quarter eagle in terms of overall rarity. There are likely fewer than 100 known with most in the EF40 to AU50 range. There are as many as six or seven extent in Uncirculated with the finest of these the Duke’s Creek MS64 which last sold for $57,500.

This fresh-to-the-market example is very well made for the issue with a better than average planchet which lacks the surface impairments often seen. The luster is slightly prooflike in texture and the color is a pleasing pale yellow gold. The relief details lack any wear or rub and this piece has a distinct “glow” about it which indicates originality.

A PCGS MS62 sold as Lot 1703 in the 1/14 Goldberg auction for $25,850. A CAC-approved NGC MS62 brought $29,900 as Heritage 10/11: 4682. As far back as January 2004, the Green Pond example, graded MS62 by PCGS, realized $25,875.

Some lucky collector is going to be able to add a really special 1852-D quarter eagle when he purchases this piece and it is among the two or three best examples of this date which I have ever owned.
