Variety 1.
The 1850-C quarter eagle is less rare than one would expect from a coin with a low mintage of 9,148. However, most of the coins known grade AU50 or lower and properly graded AU55′s are genuinely scarce. With natural color and choice surfaces, the 1850-C is an extremely hard coin to locate.
This fresh-to-the-market example is one of the few truly original 1850-C quarter eagles that I have ever seen. It is toned to a deep natural green-gold shade with similar hues seen on both sides. The surfaces are very clean (what looks like marks in the right obverse are clashes which are as struck) with no problematical marks. Some dirt in the protected areas of the reverse is proof of the originality which this coin displays in spades.
No PCGS AU55 has sold at auction since Heritage 9/06: 24711 brought $3,950. An NGC AU55 sold for $4,313 as Heritage 1/08: 3857.
This is the best available quality for this date at less than $5,000.
CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer.
