Variety 4-H. Small Mintmark, designated as such by PCGS.
The 1843-D is one of the two or three most available quarter eagles from this mint. Many have been graded AU50 but few of these show natural color and have choice surfaces. Like all quarter eagles from this mint, really nice examples are hard to locate.
This is the epitome of a fresh, crusty Dahlonega quarter eagle and it has pleasing deep green-gold and orange color which is exactly “right” for the issue. It is likely that this coin has never been dipped or lightened and there are numerous specks of dirt in the protected areas, especially on the reverse. A few small old marks on the obverse are probably all that keeps this coin from an otherwise deserved 55 grade.
No PCGS AU50 1843-D quarter eagle has sold at auction since Heritage 5/12: 4776 at $2,530. No CAC approved piece graded AU50 has ever been offered at auction.
This is a perfect type coin for the sophisticated collector who would like an affordable Dahlonega quarter eagle.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 18 finer.
