The 1838 is a marginally scarcer date in the Classic Head quarter eagle series which is not often seen in choice, original AU58.
This gem slider has superb overall eye appeal on account of its undipped, lightly marked surfaces. The color is a wholly natural green-gold and there is a good deal of underlying luster on both the obverse and the reverse. This is a well above average example for the grade.
There are no auction records for a CAC approved AU58 1838 quarter eagle. A non-CAC PCGS example sold for $2,530 as Heritage 10/11: 4636 and none have crossed the block since then.
With marginal examples of this date trading for $2,500, this seems like wonderful value at just a small premium!
CAC has approved five in this grade with six finer.
