The Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle type was produced from 1829 through 1834. In the six years of striking, only 25,023 were made. The 1833 is the second rarest issue after the 1834 and there are likely fewer than 100 known of this date.
This is a wholesome example with a lot of “meat” for the grade. The yellow-gold surfaces retain a considerable amount of luster and the wear is limited to the high spots. I have seen many inferior examples of this type in AU58 holders.
There has been no PCGS AU55 1833 quarter eagle sold at auction since August 1996 and only two AU58′s, both slabbed by NGC, have been auctioned in over a decade.
This coin is priced at a small premium over a much more common 1829 or 1831 yet it is a date which appears far, far less often. As such, it would make a wonderful type example of this short-lived and rare issue.
