The 1807 is by far the most available issue in the Capped Head Right type of 1796-1807. There were 6,812 pieces made but it is likely that fewer than 300 exist today. Looked at as both a date and a type, this issue is exceedingly hard to find in collector grades with natural color and choice surfaces; far more so than comparably dated half eagles and eagles.

This fresh-to-the-market example has absolutely glorious color with very deep natural reddish-gold on the obverse; the reverse is more of a green-gold shades with a splash of exceptional iridescent reddish-gold and gunmetal blue. I bought this coin from a dealer who purchased it raw over the counter and it was likely stored either in a leather pouch or an old coin cabinet. In my opinion, PCGS’ assigned grade is extremely conservative and based on detail and eye appeal, I could see this coin in a 40 holder. It is one of the most beautiful early gold coins I have ever offered for sale and that’s saying something as I pride myself on being a dealer with an eye for nice early gold!

There are no good auction comparables as the last PCGS VF30 1807 quarter eagle sold back in 2003.

If you price this coin solely on auction comparables for ugly stripped-n-dipped EF’s, it is going to seem expensive. But I assure you, it is a coin that you will look longingly at each time you pull t from the safety deposit box.
