Varieties of 1908-D eagle are known with No Motto and With Motto. The former is much scarcer and it is a rarity in MS64 and above.

As a rule, this variety comes with poor eye appeal due to mediocre luster and a flat strike. This piece shows an average strike with flatness at the central obverse but it has better than average luster and, most importantly, it is totally original with pretty rose and orange-gold color. There are a few grease specks on the obverse which are mint-made but this is a really high end coin for the grade with no serious marks and superior eye appeal.

A PCGS MS64 with CAC approval sold for $21,150 as Heritage 2/14: 4219.

This date is almost impossible to find in PCGS MS65 (only two have been slabbed). A small number of MS66′s have been graded by PCGS but one of these will cost at least $100,000 and with CAC approval this might increase to $125,000-150,000.

CAC has approved six in this grade with only three finer One in MS65 and two in MS66).
