There were only five eagles made at the Carson City mint in this decade. The 1880-CC and 1881-CC are common and the others are scarce with examples in choice AU being quite rare. The 1884-CC has a mintage of just 9,925 and while not quite as rare as one might expect, it is extremely hard to find nice circulated pieces with natural color and choice surfaces.

This choice, fresh example show attractive rich orange-gold color with contrasting darker hues on the devices. There is some luster present and the reverse shows flashes of semi-prooflike reflectiveness in the recesses. As on all known 1884-CC eagles, there are raised die scratches on the portrait which should not be confused with post-striking damage.

Only two PCGS EF45′s have sold at public auction since mid-2009.

An uncommonly choice 1884-CC eagle for the grade and a more cosmetically appealing than others I have seen in AU50 or even AU53 holders.

CAC has approved two in this graded with eight finer.
