The 1880-CC is the second most available Carson City eagle of this decade after the 1881-CC. It is common in EF and the lower AU grades but it is rare in properly graded AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated. It is almost never seen with original color and surfaces.
This choice example is totally original with deep orange-gold color which is contrasted by even deeper hues on the high spots. There is no real wear, just some bag friction caused by the coin having been transported loose with other coins from the mint to a local bank. The strike is strong, surfaces show only minor marks and the eye appeal is excellent.
Heritage 2/14: 5385, graded AU58 by NGC and approved by CAC, sold for $8,225. A non-CAC PCGS AU58 example realized $7,931 as Heritage 2/13: 3689.
Uncirculated examples of this date are all but unavailable, making this choice, original slider essentially the best available quality for the issue.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with just one finer (MS61).
