The 1876-S is the last of the truly rare With Motto eagles from the San Francisco mint. Only 10,000 were made and around 75 are known today, mostly in the VF-EF range. There are likely fewer than a dozen known in AU and the finest I have seen is the sole PCGS AU55 which sold at auction in late 2013 for $22,325.

This is one of the two nicest 1876-S eagles that I have handled. It has a good deal of luster present below medium greenish-gold color and the strike is sharp for the issue. The surfaces are very clean with far fewer marks than normal and the eye appeal is far above-average.

The most recent auction comparable is an inferior PCGS AU53 which brought $12,925 as Heritage 3/14: 30385. Only four AU53′s have sold at auction since 1999.

PCGS has graded just one finer (the aforementioned AU55) and it sold for close to double the amount I am asking for this close rival. An important Condition Census eagle from the popular Centennial year.
