The 1876-S is one of the rarest With Motto eagles from the San Francisco mint. Only 5,000 were made and the number of survivors is in the area of 60-70 with most grading VF-EF. The 1876-S is unknown in Uncirculated and I have never seen one that graded higher AU53.
This uncleaned, original piece has above-average eye appeal and surface quality for the date. It is mostly a medium green-gold in hue with flashes of reddish color at the borders. There are no especially deep or detracting marks and this is unusual for a date which is typically seen peppered with numerous abrasions.
Heritage 3/14: 30385, graded AU53 by PCGS, just brought $12,925.
Collectors have finally begun to appreciate the rarity of coins such as the 1876-S eagle and given the fact that this date is essentially unavailable above AU53, this specific coin is an important opportunity.
