The San Francisco eagles from the early-to-mid 1870′s don’t have the sex appeal that the issues from the 1860′s have but they are hard to find and nearly all are unknown or nearly unobtainable in Mint State grades. The 1872-S has an original mintage of 17,300 and it is likely that fewer than 150 are known with most in the EF40-AU50 range. This date is very rare in properly graded AU58 and the only Uncirculated example I have seen is an NGC MS61 that sold twice back in 2004 for $14,950 and $16,100.

This ultra-lustrous slider has bright, vibrant surfaces with pale yellow-gold color. The fields are very clean with just a few light lines in the left obverse; the reverse is Uncirculated and nearly choice on its own account.

The last PCGS AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was back in January 1996 and even in that market, the coin still realized a respectable $5,500.

Only four have been graded as such at PCGS with none finer. An important coin for the advanced specialist.
