The 1872-S eagle is a scarce coin all grades with an estimated 150 examples known from the original mintage of 17,300. When available, the typical 1872-S grades EF40 to AU50 and properly graded AU53 to AU55′s are essentially the finest available quality for the date. There are no Uncirculated 1872-S eagles known and probably no more than three or four properly graded AU58′s.

This nice, fresh-to-the-market example shows medium russet colors on the obverse and reverse. A good amount of soft satiny luster can be seen and there is dirt in the recesses on both sides. This date is usually seen very heavily abraded and this coin is a refreshing exception with almost no marks of note.

Only two PCGS AU53 1872-S eagles have sold at auction since July 2006. The last of these was Stacks 8/10: 1155 which brought $3,450.

This is the nicest available quality for the date at less than $5,000.
