Simpson-Hall pedigree, as described by PCGS.
The 1872-CC is one of the rarest Carson City eagles. Only 4,600 were made and this was an issue which circulated extensively. It is very rare in About Uncirculated with perhaps 10-12 known (none exist in Uncirculated) and most have been cleaned, processed or hideously recolored. The best I have seen is a PCGS AU58 which was last sold for $57,500 as ANR 10/04: 828; it is now in a California collection. I haven’t handled a comparable AU50 1872-CC eagle since May 2013 when I sold an NGC example to another dealer.
This pleasing example is nice enough to have been included in two of the finer collections of Liberty Head eagles ever assembled. It is solid for the grade with nice detail and very natural russet-gold color over lightly marked surfaces. A series of small marks just past star eight is mentioned for accuracy’s sake while there is an old mark at the top of the first A in AMERICA.
Only two PCGS AU50 examples have sold at auction since November 2003 and this is the finer of the two.
Rare date Carson City gold is always in demand and the advanced collector will not have many chances to procure a finer 1872-CC eagle than this.
Ex Legend Auction 6/15: 428 where it sold for $19,388.
