The 1867 is another in the long run of rare, low mintage eagles from the Philadelphia mint. Only 3,090 were struck of which around 50 or so are known. Most are seen in EF40-AU50 grades and higher end AU examples are extremely rare, in spite of inflated PCGS/NGC population figures. I have never seen an 1867 eagle I graded Uncirculated (although there is a PCGS MS61) and only three or four AU58′s which I felt were properly graded.

This choice example shows somewhat prooflike surfaces as is common on higher grade 1867 eagles. It is sharply struck and lightly worn with very pleasing peripheral reddish-gold flashes which nicely contrast the green-gold centers. The obverse is clean with no detracting marks; a few ticks in the right reverse field can be seen with the naked eye.

There are only three APR’s for AU58 examples of this date. An NGC coin sold for $17,625 as Heritage 1/14: 6883 while a choice PCGS piece with CAC approval brought a strong $30,550 as Heritage 8/13: 5881.

It is likely that this is the finest 1867 eagle available to collectors and years may go by before a finer piece becomes available.
