The 1861 is the only Civil War era eagle from either the Philadelphia or San Francisco mint which can be obtained in any grade without much effort. Nice AU55 to AU58 pieces aren’t common, though, especially with nice color and surfaces.
This piece is lustrous with pleasing medium orange-gold and greenish hues. There are some scattered marks in the fields which limit the grade but the eye appeal is above average for the date and grade.
Heritage 1/13: 7340, graded AU55 by NGC, sold for $2,585 while Heritage 1/13: 7341, graded AU55 by PCGS, sold for $3,290. Neither was approved by CAC.
An affordable example of this popular, historic issue.
CAC has approved four in this grade with seven finer.
