There were 15,055 eagles struck at the Philadelphia mint in 1860. Around 150 or so are known today with most in the EF40-AU50 range. In Uncirculated, this date is very rare with five or six known to me including two in MS64.
This fresh, frosty example shows splendid rich natural orange-gold and rose colors, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and reverse. It is sharply struck and shows moderate scuffs in the fields. What appears to be a curving scratch in the right obverse field is on the holder.
There has never been an MS62 or an MS63 example of this date sold at auction. The last PCGS MS64, ex Bass III: 676 at $29,900 reappeared in a 2013 auction where it was bid up to $70,500.
Better date eagles in Uncirculated lagged in price for years but have finally become appreciated for their rarity. The two distinctly finer 1860 eagles, both in MS64 holders, are off the market for years to come making this choice MS62 likely the best available. An important coin!
