Numismatically significant as the final No Motto eagle from this mint, the 1860-O is a date which was overlooked until recently. Only 11,100 were made and the typical example grades EF40 to AU50. In properly graded AU55, the 1860-O eagle is very scarce. The NGC population figures of 37 in this grade with 28 higher seem crazily inflated by resubmissions.
This piece is very lustrous with light orange-gold color which is contrasted by some reddish hues on the relief details. The surfaces are cleaner than normal for this issue although there are a few marks, the most noticeable of which is a small scrape on Liberty’s throat.
There have been five AU55′s sold at auction since the beginning of 2011 with a range of $4,744 to $7,188.
