The 1859-S is one of the rarest eagles from the San Francisco mint with an estimated 40-50 pieces known. Many are well worn although the current example may be the most worn (and the most affordable) of the non-impaired pieces.
This is one of those “if coins could only talk” items. It saw extensive circulation and may have even been carried as a pocket piece. The devices are fully visible and there are no serious marks seen by the naked eye. Both sides show some color, most extensively at the upper obverse.
A VG10 example sold for $2,185 as Heritage 1/07: 6062 while a F15 more recently realized $4,406 as Heritage 1/14: 6869.
This is likely the most affordable roblem-free example of this truly rare No Motto San Francisco eagle which is currently known.
