Only 7,000 eagles were struck at the San Francisco mint in 1859 and the 1859-S is a very rare date in all grades with around 50 known. This issue is typically seen in VF-EF grades and almost never with original color and surfaces.

This recently discovered coin was found in Europe and it ranks as one of the most totally original 1859-S eagles that I have seen or owned. It shows nice natural russet hues with deeper colors at the borders than at the centers. It is clean and evenly worn with no detracting marks and enough remaining luster to suggest a slightly higher grade.

No PCGS EF45 1859-S eagle has sold at auction since June 2000 (!). A PCGS AU50 sold for $28,200 as HA 2/14: 4172 while an NGC AU50, which I don’t like as much as the present PCGS EF45, realized $19,975 as Heritage 3/14: 30361.

This is an important coin for the No Motto eagle specialist.

CAC has approved this one coin in EF45 and one finer (AU50). Only two for the date have been approved thus far.
