The 1855 eagle is common in circulated grades but it is much harder to find in Uncirculated than other Philadelphia eagles of this era such as the 1853, 1854 and 1856. There are an estimated 15 or so known in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62. Examples with nice color and choice surfaces are very rare.

This piece has superb deep reddish-gold color which is possibly the result of having been stored in a leather pouch. This color becomes deepest at the borders and it is nicely contrasted by the rich orange-gold centers. The underlying luster is frosty and fully intact while the surfaces are clean enough to suggest a higher grade. The eye appeal is way above average for the date and grade.

The last two MS61 examples of this date to sell at auction (neither approved by CAC) brought $5,463 (for a PCGS graded coin) and $4,025 (for an NGC graded coin).

This is a perfect No Motto type coin for the collector who wants a special piece with real character.

CAC has approved only this one coin in MS61 with one finer (MS62).
