SUPERB GEM PROOF 1872 GOLD DOLLAR

A total of 30 1872 Proof gold dollars were struck. The survival rate is a bit higher than for other denominations of this era and the number known is likely in the area of 20 coins. This amazing example is in all probability one of the two finest known outside of museum holdings.

This piece shows a dynamic black and white cameo appearance with heavily frosted devices contrasted by deep, watery fields. There are no hairlines or major imperfections and Liberty’s cheek is rounded and free of rubbing. A tiny mint-made lintmark on the obverse at around 5:30 serves as identification.

No PCGS PR66 DCAM gold dollar dated 1872 has ever sold at auction. An NGC PR66 Ultra Cameo brought $21,150 as Heritage 2012 ANA: 5271.

This piece has been off the market for nearly a decade and it represents an opportunity for a quality conscious collector to own a really remarkable 1872 Proof gold dollar.

CAC has approved two in this grade/designation with none finer.

Ex Heritage 5/07: 2208 where it realized $29,900 while graded NGC PR67 Ultra Cameo.
