The 1858-D is the second most available Type Three gold dollar from this mint but the paucity of APR's for nice AU pieces (see below) leads us to believe that this issue is either being hoarded or it may be scarcer than we realize. It is definitely a scarce issue in the AU55 to AU58 range, especially with good color and nice surfaces.
This fresh-to-the-market example is sharply detailed for the issue with the exception of the 5 in the date and the O in DOLLAR which are flat as made. This piece appears uncleaned with natural rose and medium orange-gold hues; a good amount of luster lies below this. Some light old marks in the inner left obverse field limit the grade.
Only two PCGS AU55 examples of the 1858-D gold dollar have been auctioned since April 2006 with the last being in February 2007.
This would make an ideal type coin for the collector who would like a single high quality yet affordable Type Three Dahlonega gold dollar.
