NUMISMATICALLY SIGNIFICANT UNCIRCULATED 1849-D GOLD DOLLAR

Coinage of the new gold dollar began in 1849 with pieces being struck in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans. The 1849-D is the most available gold dollar from this mint with as many as 600-700 known. Of these, four to five dozen exist in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range.
This medium orange-gold and yellow example is well struck save for the obverse border at 3:00. The surfaces are free of significant marks and what appears to be a long diagonal scratch in the left obverse field is mint-made and exists on all 1849-D dollars.
Only two PCGS MS62 1849-D gold dollars have sold at auction since late 2012. One brought $8,225 as Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 1160 while the other sold for $11,163 as Heritage 4/13: 5372; both were approved by CAC.
This date becomes very hard to locate (and very expensive) in grades above MS62, making this nice PCGS example perfect for a sophisticated date or type set.
