RARE NGC/CAC AU55 1842-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 3-F, later die state.

The 1842-D is one of a trio of rare Dahlonega quarter eagles made in the first years of the Liberty Head design. Like the 1840-D and the 1841-D, there are fewer than 100 known, mostly in lower grades. Properly graded AU's are quite rare, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.

This even green-gold example is among the few 1842-D quarter eagles which I have seen that hasn't been destroyed from being processed or overdipped. It shows natural color over choice surfaces and lacks the mint-made depression on the cheek of Liberty which is seen on some of the higher grade pieces.

No CAC approved AU55 has appeared at auction. Low-end NGC AU55's have brought in the $9,000-11,000 range over the past decade.

An important Dahlonega quarter eagle.

CAC has approved three in AU55 with two finer.
