Small S variety; not designated by PCGS.
The 1856-S is the most available of the five Three Dollar gold pieces produced at the San Francisco mint. It is not hard to find in grades as high as AU55 to AU58 and its relative affordability makes it popular with type collectors who want to own a single SF Three from this mint.
The Small S variety is seen on fewer than 10% of all 1856-S Three Dollar gold pieces and were it to become recognized by PCGS and NGC, it would sell for a premium over the more common Medium S.
This is a pleasing, choice EF with natural russet color, even wear and no marks worthy of note. Most collector grade 1856-S Threes have been cleaned at one time.
The last PCGS EF45 example of this date to sell at auction realized $1,880 as Heritage 6/14: 5660 and it was low end for the grade
