Coin quiz: how many of you realize that the 1859-S quarter eagle is a scarce coin with fewer than 100 known from the original mintage of 15,200 and that survivors in AU and above are very infrequently offered for sale, especially with choice surfaces and natural color?
This high end example is very lustrous and has enough body to suggest a 58 grade. It shows nice light rose and russet hues with good overall details (except for the right claw and leg which are weak as usual) and reasonably clean surfaces.
Only once PCGS AU55 1859-S quarter eagle has sold at auction since 2009 and it realized $2,070 as Heritage 7/09: 2400.
This is the only 1859-S quarter eagle in AU55 to be approved by CAC and only four finer have been approved as well.
