The 1857-S quarter eagle is common in the EF40 to AU50 range but properly graded AU55 examples are scarce.
This piece seems undergraded and it has the luster and body one would expect to see on a coin graded AU58. It shows nice light rose and orange-gold color and has very choice surfaces.
Only one example graded AU55 by PCGS has sold in over a decade and it brought $1,725 as Goldberg 9/12: 2013; it was not approved by CAC.
This historic early date San Francisco quarter eagle is always popular as collectors try to purchase nice pieces to go with higher grade SSCA double eagles from this date and mint.
CAC has approved three in this grade with a dozen finer.
