The 1856-O is the mot underrated quarter eagle from the New Orleans mint. It is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55 and rare above this. It is perhaps the second most difficult quarter eagle from this mint–after the 1845-O–to locate with natural color and choice surfaces.
This choice, original coin has natural deep russet color over lustrous, unabraded surfaces. It is well struck for the issue and has the appearance of an AU55.
No CAC approved AU53 from either service has ever been sold at auction.
CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
