As with most of the San Francisco double eagles from the middle part of the 1880′s, the 1885-S is scarce in MS63, quite rare in MS64 and virtually unknown in Gem; PCGS and NGC have a combined population of just one coin (!) in MS65.
This piece has choice surfaces for the issue with just a few minor ticks seen in the fields. It is undipped and wholesome with rich yellow-gold and orange colors atop glowing frosty luster.
There were five auction records for this date in MS63 during 2013. These ranged from a low of $5,017 for an NGC example to a high of $6,463 for a PCGS with CAC approval.
If available, a PCGS MS64 sells for double the amount of an MS63, making the latter a better value in my opinion.
