The 1864-S is one of the more available Civil War double eagles from this mint. It is common in EF45 to AU53 grades but it is not often seen with natural color and surfaces.
This is a choice and totally original example with “old time” deep green-gold hues on both sides. The surfaces are very clean and some luster can be seen in the protected areas.
A non-CAC NGC EF45 brought $2,585 as Heritage 2/14: 4833.
CAC has approved six in this grade with 26 finer.
