The 1855 is the first of a short run of highly undervalued Type One double eagles from the Philadelphia mint. Along with the 1856, 1857 and 1858, the 1855 is mostly seen in EF40 to AU50 grades and it is quite scarce in properly graded AU58, especially with minimal marks.
This is a very solid coin for the grade with a good deal of luster and pleasing medium orange-gold color. The typical 1855 double eagle in this grade range has been heavily processed and has little “zing” but this specific coin has a really fresh appearance with no severe marks. A few very small edge marks at 3:00 and 4:00 are the result of being shipped loose in a bag and these do not detract.
There has been just a single auction record for an 1855 double eagle in AU58 in 2013 and this was Heritage 1/13: 7468 which was lackluster and baggy yet it still sold for $5,288.
This date is virtually impossible to locate in Uncirculated (and expensive to boot) making this example an important opportunity for the savvy Type One collector.
