RARE CHOICE AU 1852-O DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CHOICE SURFACES
The 1852-O is one of two available New Orleans double eagles in higher grades. Along with the 1851-O is numerically plentiful in AU55 holders but 90% of the coins which are graded as such have been processed and have poor eye appeal. Properly graded choice AU’s are rare and always in demand as type coins.
This fresh to the market example is well defined, very clean and pleasingly toned in natural green-gold hues. The detail is excellent while the surfaces are almost entirely free of the detracting abrasions which plague this issue.
The last NGC AU50 example with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $14,100 as Heritage 2014 ANA: 4058.
This would make an ideal New Orleans Type One type coin for the collector who appreciates true originality.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with a dozen finer.
