Housed in an old no-line “fatty” holder. By today’s standards I grade this coin a solid AU55.
The 1850-O is numismatically significant as the first double eagle struck at the New Orleans mint. While probably somewhat overrated in lower grades, it is rare in properly graded AU55 and above and it is exceedingly rare in full Mint State. It is almost never seen with original color and surfaces.
This is one of the more cosmetically appealing 1850-O double eagles that I can recall seeing. It is 100% original with natural deep green-gold color atop lightly scuffed, lustrous surfaces. It shows die lapping on the obverse which has weakened the stars but the central details are quite strong for the issue. I can’t recall the last time I saw an 1850-O with the depth of coloration and overall eye appeal which this coin displays.
In my opinion, this coin is considerably nicer than the NGC AU55 which sold for $18,800 as Heritage 10/12: 6141.
A wonderful coin which would fit into even the most sophisticated collection of New Orleans double eagles.
Ex Heritage 1/13: 5923, where it sold for $18,800.
CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer (AU58 and MS61).
