RARE PCGS/CAC AU55 1868-S HALF EAGLE

While this date has a relatively high mintage of 52,000, the 1868-S half eagle has a low survival rate and it is likely that fewer than 150 are known in total. In the mid to high range of AU, this is a very rare and underappreciated date and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with but a single coin known to me (PCGS MS61).

This fresh-to-the-market example is extremely choice for the date and grade with fully natural orange-gold color with accents of rose at the lower obverse border. There is a good deal of underlying luster and the surfaces lack the typically seen scuffs.

Only one PCGS AU55 has sold at auction since early 2007 and it was not choice; it realized $4,113 as Heritage 8/12: 4607.

This is essentially the finest available quality for the date and it is an important half eagle for the specialist.

CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer (both in AU58).
