AFFORDABLE 1862-S HALF EAGLE
A strong case can be made for calling this date the third rarest half eagle from the San Francisco mint after the uncollectable 1854-S and the extremely rare 1864-S. Of the 9,500 struck, there are no more than 50-60 1862-S half eagles known and many are in the Fine-Very Fine range.
This example is well-worn but it shows good overall detail for the grade with some of the hair and feathers seen on either side. The color is a pleasing golden-orange pastel hue and there are no severe marks of note seen on the obverse or on the reverse. Here is a coin that could tell some great stories if it could only talk.
There are no recent APR’s for comparable 1862-S half eagles.
Here is likely one of the few affordable yet cosmetically appealing examples known of this rare and popular Civil War issue.
