Variety 44-H, Medium D mintmark. Designated on the holder by PCGS.

The 1859-D is one of the dozen scarcest half eagles from this mint in terms of overall rarity but it is a bit more available in higher grades than previously believed. It is hard to locate in the higher circulated grades, especially with good luster and bold details.

This Gem Slider looks MS62 to MS63 to the naked eye but there is barely visible rub seen on the high spots of the obverse; the reverse is very choice. Light yellow gold colors are seen on both sides with some splashes of orange-gold at the central reverse. The strike is typical for the issue with some minor flatness seen at the centers. The surfaces are clean and choice and this coin likely saw limited–if any–actual time in commerce. It is, frankly, considerably more appealing than most seen in Uncirculated holders.

Only one PCGS AU58 1859-D half eagle has sold at auction since 2006 and it brought $5,175 as Stacks Bowers 11/11: 9529.

This is one of only two 1859-D half eagles which have been graded AU58+ by PCGS.

A wonderful, high grade Dahlonega half eagle which is ideal for inclusion in a quality type set.

CAC has approved four in AU58 with only one finer (MS63).
