Variety 1. Extremely late die state with a noticeable rim cud on the obverse at 10:00. I have personally never seen another 1859-C with this cud and would assume that it is extremely rare.
The 1859-C half eagle is a moderately scarce date which becomes hard to locate in the middle to higher AU grades, especially with original color and surfaces. This example has nice medium to deep russet color on both sides with some underlying luster seen on both sides. The reverse, as always, is weaker than the obverse and this is due to improper preparation of the die.
The last PCGS AU50 1859-C half eagle sold at auction was Heritage 1/05: 9032 which realized $4,313. An NGC/CAC AU50 sold for $2,825 as Heritage 1/13: 22375.
This coin is an interesting combination of nice quality and an unusual mint error, making it very desirable for the advanced specialist.
