While comparatively available in higher grades due to the existence of a hoard, the 1856-D is actually among the scarcer Dahlonega half eagles in terms of availability in all grades. It is not seen very often in the AU grades.

This coin has the naked-eye appearance of an AU55 and it has probably been net graded down to AU50 due to a small obverse edge nick at 4:00.  This color is an appealing medium green-gold with some luster remaining on both sides. The strike is typical for the issue with weakness noted at the borders and a distinctive beveled edge which is prominent on the obverse.

The last AU50 1856-D to sell at auction was Heritage 7/10: 4670, graded by PCGS, which realized $2,990. Only three AU50′s in total have sold at auction since 2000.

A reasonably priced example which should appeal to the date collector of Dahlonega half eagles.
