The 1855-C is a median level scarcity in the Charlotte half eagle series with a comparable overall rarity to the 1851-C and 1859-C. It is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range and properly graded AU55 examples are scarce.
This lightly worn example has a considerable amount of luster and it shows medium yellow-gold color changing to orange at the central obverse. The strike is a bit weak at the central reverse which is not uncommon with this issue; the surfaces are clean and choice with an absence of the typical detracting marks.
There are no auction records for an AU55 with CAC approval for this date. I recently sold a PCGS/CAC AU55 from the Virginia Bank hoard to a private collector.
Here is a wholesome, cosmetically appealing example of this slightly better date which should work well for the advanced collector of Charlotte half eagles.
CAC has approved three in this grade with three finer.
