The 1851-O half eagle is comparable in rarity to the 1843-O Large Letters and 1846-O in terms of overall rarity but it is harder to locate in AU and above. It becomes a scarce date in the lower AU grades and it is very rare in Uncirculated with around six to eight known.
This choice, lustrous example shows nice medium reddish-gold and orange color which is “correct” for this date. The strike is, as always, somewhat weak at the centers but there is more than enough “meat” on the surfaces to justify the assigned grade. A few small marks in the fields do not detract and the eye appeal is far above average for the grade.
The last APR for an 1851-O half eagle in PCGS AU50 was Heritage 10/12: 5886, which realized $3,290 and was low end for the grade. Before this, the last APR for a PCGS AU50 was back in the 2003 FUN sale.
