Variety 19-I.
While generally accorded “common date” status, the 1847-D is, in fact, a scarcer Dahlonega half eagle which is very rare in Uncirculated and very hard to find in the higher AU grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This pleasing medium orange-gold example shows rich natural color over frosty surfaces. There is a single mark between the bun and star eleven on the obverse while the reverse is clean and choice. The strike is excellent and this is one of just a handful of 1847-D half eagles which I have owned that were fully original and showed no signs of past dipping.
The last AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece which brought $4,994 as Heritage 8/12: 4589. Prior to this, no slabbed AU58 1847-D half eagle had sold at auction since January 2007.
If you are assembling a date set of Dahlonega half eagles, this may be one of the few chances you will have to purchase a CAC-quality 1847-D.
CAC has approved two in this grade with two finer.
