The 1847-C is among the more available Charlotte half eagles from an overall rarity standpoint. It is scarcer than generally realized in the middle to higher AU grades and very rare in Uncirculated. It is extremely difficult to find with original color and surfaces.
This choice example is very lustrous with pleasing natural orange-gold and light green colors on the obverse and reverse. There are a few light marks in the right obverse field which limit the grade; without these, this coin is a no-brainer AU55. A small, faint mint-made grease stain on the reverse joins the right wing to the beak.
Just one PCGS AU53 1847-C half eagle has sold at auction in over a decade and that piece, ex Bowers and Merena 3/10: 3755 at $3,508, was not approved by CAC.
A real “sleeper” in this grade and one of the nicer examples of this date that I have handled in some time.
This is the only example of this date approved by CAC in this grade; seven have been approved higher than this.
