RARE SLIDER 1845-O HALF EAGLE
Variety-1, Repunched 18 in date.
In the No Motto New Orleans half eagle series, The 1845-O is most similar in rarity to the 1846-O and 1851-O. The 1845-O is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range. It is scarce in the idle AU grades and rare in properly graded AU58. The NGC population figure for this date in AU58 is vastly inflated and includes some pretty marginal coins.
This frosty slider shows little actual wear but the surfaces do exhibit some small ticks as is typical for the issue. The color is a pleasing medium orange-gold while the strike is sharp with the centers mostly full. Some weakness on the inner obverse border from 3:00 to 5:00 is hardly noticeable.
A fairly similar NGC/CAC AU58 brought $6,463 at Heritage 12/13: 3845. I sold a PCGS/CAC AU58 for $6,750 to a collector in July 2014.
Choice, high grade No Motto New Orleans half eagles are popular and in demand.
