The 1845-O half eagle is of similar rarity to the 1846-o; both are seen less frequently than the 1843-O Large Letters and are far scarcer than the common 1844-O. The 1845-O is not seen often above AU50 to AU53 and very infrequently with natural color.
This very attractive example shows deep reddish-gold and orange hues that appear to be the result of having been stored in a pouch or an envelope. There is a good deal of remaining luster on both sides and were it not for a few too many light scuffs in the fields, I could easily see this piece in an AU55 holder.
Only four examples of this date in AU53 have sold at auction in the last four years and the most recent, a PCGS graded example, brought $3,105 as B+M 8/10: 1661. NO CAC approved examples in this grade have ever sold at auction.
An attractive, nicer-than-normal example of this undervalued issue.
