The 1841-C is tied for the fourth rarest half eagle from this mint with an estimated 125-150 known, mostly in VF and EF. It is scarce in the mid-AU range and it is quite rare with natural color and surfaces.
This is a delightful example which shows real character as a result of its mellow natural green-gold color. The strike is exceptionally bold for the issue and the surfaces are very clean with just a few tiny marks seen on either side. There is some dirt caked in the recesses which attests to this coin’s originality.
There have been only three AU55′s sold at auction since 2000. The last, graded by NGC but not certified by CAC, brought $4,113 as Heritage 2/14: 4117.
CAC has approved two in this grade with only four finer.
